Hollywood Ending

For some peculiar reason, I love every other Woody Allen movie (and correspondingly hate every other one.) I haven’t seen the last few, so I lost track of where I was at in the sequence. This movie was getting such terrible reviews that I feared the worst. Indeed, the first scene was horrible. Treat Williams, George Hamilton (who looks like raw-hide), and the beautiful Tia Leoni were doing totally unbelievable line-readings. There was no connection and no emotion. It looked like they were trying out for the parts.

After that, Woody Allen finally came into the picture. Yes, he’s still doing the same old tired, neurotic thing, but for some reason, I really enjoyed it. The script was not the greatest and the blind director thing was over-done, but I discovered that I really just love any movie that attacks Hollywood and its arrogant, silly ways. I myself have seen many a movie that looks like the director directed it blind (and you just know that’s exactly where Allen got the notion to do this.) I really enjoyed his neurotic jabs and his slapstick antics. It’s a guilty pleasure, but I laughed many, many times.

Occasionally, this movie looked like it was directed by somebody blind (especially the scene wherein you can see the crew and the boom-mic in the mirror,) but all-in-all I had a good time. Perhaps it was more of a stand-up comedy night than a movie night. I’ve found that the general public usually only cares if there’s a string of really bad one-liners (50% colon humor) rather than any real script. With this movie, I’m sorry to report that a string of Hollywood one-liners was enough for me. The public will most likely hate this movie because they just will not get most of the inside jokes.

After seeing this, I’d hold off on sending the Cinemator from the movie-future to put an end to Allen’s never-ending movie-making career. I wish that he would just STOP having fabulously beautiful, young babes as his love-interests. The kissing scenes are quite painful to watch (I can’t imagine how they are to participate in!)
